Master the Roundabout Flow
Roundabouts are efficient intersections, but navigating them can be a little tricky if you’re not used to their unique flow. However, adopting a few key habits can ensure you have a safe and smooth experience every time. Follow these tips to master the roundabout like a pro.

Prepare Before You Enter
Successful roundabout navigation begins well before you reach the intersection.
First, slow down. Reduce your speed significantly as you approach the roundabout. This gives you time to observe and react safely. Next, pay close attention to signs and markings. Look for road signs and lane markings that clearly indicate which lane you should use for your desired exit. Getting into the correct lane early is crucial for maintaining the flow of traffic.
Most importantly, you must yield to traffic already in the circle. Give way to vehicles already circulating in the roundabout coming from your left (in countries that drive on the right). Always remember that circulating traffic has the right-of-way.
Choose Your Lane Wisely
Your chosen exit dictates which lane you should use when entering a multi-lane roundabout. Therefore, select your lane carefully.
- Take the Right Lane: Use this lane if you plan to take the very first exit.
- Move to the Left Lane: Use this lane if you are taking the last exit or going straight across the roundabout, especially in multi-lane layouts.
- Utilize the Middle Lane: If the roundabout has more than two lanes, use the middle lane for intermediate exits (anything past the first, but not the last).
Enter and Circulate Smoothly
Once you’ve selected the right lane, focus on entering the circle without hesitation.
Start by checking for gaps. Look for a safe and significant gap in the circulating traffic before you enter. Do not stop if the way is clear. Stopping unnecessarily breaks the flow and can cause delays.
Simultaneously, signal your intentions. Use your turn signals to communicate your plan to other drivers. Indicate right if you plan to take the first exit. Conversely, use your left indicator if you plan to go past the first exit (straight or later). Finally, enter smoothly. Merge into the roundabout path without abrupt stops or sharp turns.
While you are inside the roundabout, keep moving. Do not stop to wait for traffic unless absolutely necessary to avoid a collision. Also, do not overtake other vehicles while navigating the circular path. Stay securely within your chosen lane and simply follow the curve. Most importantly, stay alert. Always watch for vulnerable road users, specifically pedestrians and cyclists, as well as vehicles attempting to enter or exit.

Signal Your Exit and Depart
Exiting the roundabout requires just as much communication as entering.
Prepare to signal your exit. Turn on your right indicator just before you reach your designated exit. This clearly informs drivers behind you and those waiting to enter that you are leaving the circle. Before you commit to the exit, check for pedestrians and cyclists. Always ensure the exit road is clear, as pedestrians or cyclists might be crossing your path. Finally, exit smoothly. Leave the roundabout at a safe, controlled speed and continue on your way.
Improve Your Confidence
If you are new to roundabouts, confidence comes with practice.
To gain familiarity, practice in less busy roundabouts first. This allows you to get a better feel for the flow of traffic without the pressure of heavy congestion. Above all, stay calm and focused. Roundabouts can seem confusing, but maintaining your composure helps you process information quickly and make safe decisions. You can also observe other experienced drivers. Learn from how they safely navigate the circle, but always ensure you follow the official rules of the road.
By embracing these guidelines, you equip yourself to handle roundabouts safely and efficiently, minimizing the risk of a collision.
